Travel Guide

Getting There

There are no commercial flights to Antarctica. Most trips begin with an expedition cruise departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, crossing the Drake Passage, with landing opportunities determined by weather and sea conditions. Antarctica has no cities—only research stations and expedition bases—and travelers remain with their cruise ship and guides throughout the journey.

Weather

Expect cold, fast-changing conditions. During the austral summer, temperatures can occasionally rise to around 60°F (about 15°C), but conditions often hover near freezing, with wind and sudden drops well below freezing.

Best Time to Visit

February and early March are often considered ideal—typically offering improved conditions for crossing the Drake Passage, some of the warmest temperatures of the season on the continent, and excellent wildlife viewing.
